Former Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford dead at 67
Former Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford has died at the age of 67, according to information released by current Sheriff Mike Fraley and Mayor Patty Woodby.
“Sheriff Lunceford was more than just a public servant — he was a pillar of our community,” Woodby said. “He dedicated his life to the well-being and safety of the people of Carter County and our region. His legacy of service lives on.”
Lunceford had a law enforcement career that spanned nearly four decades including positions with the Johnson City Police Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and two terms as county sheriff. He also served as a United States Marine from 1976 to 1979.
Tennessee Sheriff’s Association President and Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy lauded Lunceford for his reliable help and his active participation in TSA duties. Woodby noted Lunceford was a native of the county’s Fish community.
