Debris clean-up crew discovers decomposed body in Avery County

The Avery County, NC Sheriff’s Office has confirmed the discovery of human remains in the Ingalls community near the North Toe River.
Preliminary information indicates the decomposed body is the person reported missing after Hurricane Helene in September when they were washed away by the strong currents of flood waters at Buck Hill Campground. The body was found by a member of a debris clean-up crew near the town of Newland. It was sent to the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh for identification.
That result leaves one missing person remaining from the flood event in the county.
